His investigations have directed to several new laws in Washington that: target businesses that are cheating the welfare system, keep guns out of the hands of felons and domestic abusers, uncover corruption at state-licensed drug and alcohol treatment centers, and enhance monitoring of offenders serving sentences on home detention.
Chris’ stories have changed public policy: at the state’s fraud investigation unit; in the monitoring of offenders on King County’s work program; in the liberal use of “half-days” at Washington schools; in the way police departments trace guns used in crimes; to reduce the use of an automated bail system that released suspects charged in serious crimes; by disclosing how Seattle’s worst parking violators were going unpunished; by displaying public employees cashing in on unneeded overtime; and enhanced inspections of commercial trucks on Washington roadways.
His stories led to criminal charges against individuals who rolled back car odometers, bilked the food stamp program, tried to illegally buy firearms despite court orders barring them from owning guns, a guy who posed as a doctor to cash in on the flu epidemic with a fly-by-night clinic, and a home-based daycare tenant who sexually abused young clients.
Chris has also spent many years reporting on the case of notorious skyjacker DB Cooper (if you know where he is, please give us a call!). At KING 5, he has worked the federal criminal justice beat since the days after 9/11.
Chris arrived at KING 5 in 1994, after launching his broadcast profession in radio in Dayton, Ohio. While a student at Wright State University, Chris commenced working at WHIO radio in Dayton, before moving to the television side of WHIO’s newsroom. While there, he covered the crime and court beat for five years.
In addition to several Murrow Awards and regional Emmy for investigative reporting, Chris has won a Peabody Award for outstanding television in 2011, a national Sigma Delta Chi Award from the Society of Professional Journalists, and the National Emmy Award for investigative reporting by a local TV station in 2013. He still has family and countless friends in Ohio, but he is proud to call the Pacific Northwest his home.
