Marriott serves as a morning weathercaster at KING 5 News based in Seattle, WA. He arrived at KING 5 in 1987 as a Weekend News meteorologist and shifted to his current position in 1990. Rich has had the unique experience of forecasting weather in Washington for 48 years, and he has had the privilege of being a member of KING 5 for over 35 years.
While at King 5, Rich has had the good fortune to meet wonderful individuals and has had amazing experiences. Probably his most notable moments have been flying with the Blue Angels (a lifetime experience) and assisting in reporting on the Vancouver Winter Olympics (I still love snow). Rich’s one journalistic claim to fame was an Emmy Award for work on their special on Climate Change.
Before coming to KING-TV, he served as a meteorologist for the U.S. Forest Service Northwest Mountain Weather and Avalanche Forecast Center. Rich also offered detailed avalanche forecasts and mountain weather for Washington and Oregon to government and private agencies, as well as the public.
While at College, he worked in the department of meteorology researching the earth’s upper atmosphere including computer modeling of the global circulation. It was fascinating to research, and he had wished to serve in the space program.
Apart from being a senior meteorologist at King 5, Rich belongs to the Oceanographic Society the Canadian Meteorological, the American Geophysical Union, and the American Meteorological Society (and has their Broadcast Seal). He is also a skilled representative of the Board representative Emeritus of the Friends of NWAC and American Avalanche Association. Over the years Rich has co-authored research papers in scientific journals, including the Journal of Geoelecticity and Geomagnetism, Annals of Glaciology, Nature, Solar Physics, and others.
