Lee Miller was born in Rolla, Missouri, but she and her family relocated to Edmond, Oklahoma, when she was six months old. Her mom worked as a bank vice president while her father was a University of Central Oklahoma professor. As a teenager, Shannon enrolled at Edmond North High School, working with a flexible program that accommodated her training, travel, and competition schedule. From there, she earned a law degree from Boston College.

Miller announced her engagement in August 2007 and on August 25, 2008, they got married. The duo are proud parents of two children: a son, John Rocco, born on October 28, 2009, and a daughter, Sterling Diane, born on June 25, 2013.

Previously, Shannon married Christopher B. Phillips, a lawyer and ophthalmologist in June 1999. The duo split in 2004, and their divorce was finalized in 2006. While Christopher accused his ex-wife of infidelity with a married male athlete, Miller disagreed with the claim, and it did not figure into the divorce grounds.

In February 2011, Miller disclosed that she had been diagnosed with germ-cell ovarian cancer, a month after doctors extracted a baseball-sized cyst from one of her ovaries. After college, she earned a law degree from Boston College, but never worked as a lawyer, instead working in broadcasting, giving gymnastics clinics and entrepreneur. Shannon also formed her company named “Shannon Miller Lifestyle” which promotes healthy living, particularly for ladies, and serves as a motivational speaker. She also operates as President of the Shannon Miller Foundation, which serves to fight childhood obesity.

Shannon had the top record of any American female gymnast through the early 21st century, winning seven Olympic medals, and served as the leader of the US team that won the team gold medal at Atlanta in 1996. She was World All-Around Champion in 1993 and 1994 and received the 1995 Pan Am Games All-Around gold medal. Miller also received five gold medals and a silver at the 1993-94 Worlds. Although she didn’t win a gold medal at the 1992 Olympics, she won five medals in Barcelona, the most of any American athlete at those Games. She returned in 1996, earning two gold medals, one in team and another on the balance beam.
