Matson works at DC News Now, as a weekday noon and 5 PM Meteorologist. He joined the DC News Now team in May 2020. After covering the morning newscasts for the last two years, Damon will be forecast together with co-anchor Mark Hall.
Before arriving in the DMV, he spent two years as a weekend meteorologist/reporter at WBNG in Binghamton, NY. While forecasting the various forms of weather in the Southern Tier, Damon was honored with the 2019 Outstanding Weathercast Award from the New York State Broadcasters Association.
He commenced his profession while still in graduate school, covering the weather on the weekends at WTOK in Meridian, MS for two years. Born and raised in western Pennsylvania, Damon graduated from Brockway Area High School before getting his bachelor’s in meteorology from the California University of Pennsylvania and then his master’s degree from Mississippi State University in Broadcast Meteorology.
Well-versed in the science of meteorology, Damon was honored with the 2015 NOAA Hollings Scholarship while still in school, conducting weather communications research for a summer with the National Weather Service in New Orleans. He is a part of the National Weather Association and American Meteorological Society, and he was recently given the Certified Broadcast Meteorologist Seal from the AMS in November 2021.
Damon has been a mentor to young, motivating journalists and meteorologists, and having grown up in a big family he knows how essential it is to be a member of the community. In his spare time, Damon enjoys keeping up with his favorite bands and music, going to the gym, traveling to see friends, and following his favorite Pittsburgh sports teams.
