Letitia’s first sign that she wanted to become a journalist, came in third grade, at Hickorydale Elementary school, in Dayton. She would spend much of her recess time, ‘interviewing her classmates,’ using a stick as a pretend microphone.
Letitia also had a keen passion for creative writing at a young age. Later, she would learn how obvious it was to her teachers and a few family members that she would eventually get into journalism, at some point. Letitia’s first experience with broadcasting began as a student at Meadowdale High School, in Harrison Township where she was auditioned and offered a position at KMHS, our in-house school broadcast system.
Letitia earned a degree from Central Michigan University, in Mount Pleasant, Michigan, in Broadcast and Cinematic Arts. Before completing her degree, she was offered a position at WCMU-FM; a public broadcasting establishment that serves the Northern-Lower Peninsula, as well as Central Michigan.
For Letitia, one of the benefits of working full-time at CMU was the University paid for the remainder of her tuition. She had to become a part-time student, so it took her a little longer to complete her coursework to earn her degree. During Letitia’s tenure, she was part of the Minority Affairs Faculty Council. She also served as a Staff advisor to the ‘Youth Ambassadors For Christ,’ student gospel choir, on campus.
After a few years working at CMU, she accepted a position closer to her Dayton home, in Columbus where she worked at WCBE-FM, a public radio station, certified to the Columbus Board of Education. Letitia returned home to Dayton in the Fall of 1995, taking a job at Hawes-Saunders Broadcast Properties, Inc. This marked her first professional position at a ‘commercial’ radio station. Moving home to Dayton allowed Letitia to reconnect with friends and family, serve her society, and work in the job she was seemingly destined to enter. After a few years of delivering news at U-92 FM, Letitia was promoted to News and Community Affairs Director.
Letitia is a proud member of the Dayton Area Broadcasters Hall of Fame and was inducted into the ‘Class of 2019.’ She has also served on a few boards and committees and has involved herself in countless programs around the Miami Valley.
Letitia has a heart for occasions and programs that involve kids and senior citizens. She has also served as Mistress of Ceremony for hundreds of programs including The Lou Rawls Parade of Stars- benefitting the United Negro College Fund, NAACP Freedom Fund Banquets, and the annual fundraiser for The Mercy Manor Transitional Home for Women.
