Cheryl McHenry Career and Wikipedia

McHenry works for WHIO TV 7 in Dayton, Ohio, as an Anchor/Investigative Reporter. She is lucky to be doing her dream job.  Ever since her family started watching the news on WHIO when she was a kid, Cheryl wanted to work there.

She was drawn to the profession of journalism because I’ve always been curious about what’s going on in her community, the nation, and the world. Cheryl was raised reading the newspaper and vividly recalls watching TV news coverage of JFK’s funeral and Neil Armstrong’s moonwalk. She takes very seriously the viewers’ trust and has strived every day of her profession to be accurate, fair, and balanced in her reporting.

In her senior year of college, Cheryl interned at WKRC radio where she learned to really use what she was learning. In those days, almost everyone worked in radio news prior to moving into television news. Radio was a great training ground for developing one’s delivery, writing fast, and meeting hourly deadlines.

From there, Cheryl worked in radio for three years—with stints at WING in Dayton and WCKY in Cincinnati, prior to landing a career as a reporter at WHIO-TV in August of 1981. For much of the 1980s, she reported on the Dayton Police/Montgomery County Courts beat, covering all kinds of stories from the local criminal justice system. Cheryl also reported on several big cases and high-profile trials.

Cheryl McHenry Awards

During those years, she earned four regional Emmy Awards and three of them were for Spot News (now called Breaking News), including live coverage of a grueling police hunt for a teenager who was abducted by her mom’s killer. In 1990, she earned an Emmy for Investigative Reporting, for a three-part series on repeat drunk driving offenders.

In 2013, Cheryl added two more Emmys for half-hour specials that her co-workers and she produced. One was called “PTSD: Invisible Wound”; the other was “Miami Valley Murder Mysteries”–to raise awareness of post-traumatic stress among our military combat veterans.

Cheryl added two more Emmys in current years for another “Miami Valley Murder Mysteries” and a special half-hour report regarding issues at the Dayton VA. In 2020—she won her ninth Emmy for Breaking News coverage of the Oregon District mass shooting in 2019.

Cheryl has been honored twice as Best Anchor by the Ohio Associated Press and twice as Best Anchor by the Society of Professional Journalists. She is part of the Ohio Valley Silver Circle offered by the National Academy of Television Arts and Science for performing distinguished service in the television industry for twenty-five years or more.
