Hawkins serves as a Sports Director at WJHL-TV, Johnson City, Tennessee. He joined the WJHL-TV family in 1986 as a videographer. Three years later, Kenny became Assistant Sports Director and in 1992 he was promoted to Sports Director. During Kenny’s tenure, WJHL-TV’s sports department has earned numerous awards, such as Best Sports Video, Best Sports Story, Best Sports Talk Show, and the Tennessee Associated Press award for Best Sportscast.

During his early years, Kenny played basketball, football, and softball before blowing out a knee during a game. Not to be discouraged, Kenny assisted in creating a high school sports show titled “Sportscenter 7,” which premiered on local cable stations in Oak Ridge, Oliver Springs, and Clinton.

Kenny says his favorite sport to report is football on both the college levels and high school. He has a lot of respect for small colleges like Emory & Henry,  Carson-Newman, Tusculum, and UVA-Wise, “but nothing beats over 100,000 fans at Neyland Stadium on a Saturday.  He is also the co-host of the radio show 3 days a week the “Morning Monster” on WXSM Cumulus radio at 640AM in the mornings.

Kenny claimed the Virginia Associated Press award in 2004 for the best sports department, the only station to be located outside of the state to win that honor. He was also inducted into the ETSU Communications Department Hall of Fame in 2005. The Sports Director is heavily engaged in the community. His charitable job over the years has engaged working with the United Way, Speedway Children’s Charities,  Relay for Life, Doe River Gorge, St. Jude’s, and the Diabetes Association to name a few.

The Sports Director is co-founder/honorary chairman of the Tri-Cities chapter of Step Out Walk for Diabetes which has raised around a million dollars.
