He currently wakes up the Gulf Coast as co-anchor of NBC15 Today, teaming up with co-anchor and a longtime friend Kelly Foster. Darwin will still deliver on-site reporting, as well as the occasional feature segment that has earned him a fixture in the Mobile/Pensacola television community since 1987. He worked in community college and local radio in high school prior to transferring to the University of Kentucky in Lexington. Then he worked in radio in Lexington until 1980, switching to television news. Darwin also operated as a South Kentucky Bureau reporter and, thereafter, police beat reporter for CBS affiliate WKYT-TV in Lexington. He was also appointed as a weekend anchor in his hometown of Hazard for the CBS affiliate WYMT-TV.
In 1987, weary of the cold and snow of winter, Darwin headed south to the Gulf, alighting at the local CBS affiliate in Mobile. Late in 1999, he accepted a job at WPMI NBC15 News as a feature reporter with his famous”Here’s Darwin!” reports. In 2014 Darwin made the change to the a.m. anchor desk, giving him another chance to communicate with his loyal viewers.
“When he first came to Mobile, his intention was to stay a couple of years and carry on,” he says. “Well, that was 3 decades ago! Mobile has shown him amazing support over the past 30 years. And he is proud to see how the region and city have progressed. Darwin possesses a century-old house in Midtown Mobile, in the city’s Old Dauphin Way Historic District. He is a huge supporter of Mobile’s dynamic downtown. And here at NBC15, his love for Carnival has gained him the nickname of Mobile’s Mr. Mardi Gras!
