Sweeney is a First Alert Meteorologist for WVIT (NBC Connecticut). He joined the First Alert forecast team in October 2008 and delivers Connecticut’s most accurate forecast every weekend morning on NBC Connecticut.  Darren also enjoys covering breaking weather during the week live and in the studio.
During his time at NBC CONNECTICUT, he has covered some of the biggest storms of his profession.  Darren also was part of the team that forecasted during Hurricane Irene, Superstorm Sandy as well as many tornado touchdowns.
Born and raised in West Hartford, Darren is thrilled to be forecasting for the station he was raised driving by and watching almost every day. His fascination with weather commenced at a young age through all of New England’s wild weather extremes. Darren’s household knew he was captivated by storms because when everyone was going inside to take shelter, he would grab a video camera and go outdoors.
He acquired his Bachelor’s degree from Central Connecticut State University and went ahead to earn his Master’s degree at Syracuse University’s highly regarded Newhouse School of Communication. Darren also graduated in 2003 from Mississippi State University’s Broadcast Meteorology program. He also has recognition from the National Weather Association (NWA) along with their seal of approval, as well as the American Meteorological Society (AMS) with their seal of approval.

 Darren has also experience with predicting New England weather. As a meteorologist for a Springfield TV station, he earned two Associated Press honors for Best Weathercast in 2006 and for coverage of historic flooding in October 2005. He also reported live during extreme weather events, most recently the tremendous flooding that took place along the Merrimack River in May 2006.  More recently, Darren was awarded a “Breaking News” honor by the Connecticut Society for Professional Journalists for his coverage of the 2009 EF-1 Wethersfield tornado.

Before returning to New England, Darren garnered experience forecasting extreme weather and tracking hurricanes for WFTX-TV in Fort Myers, Fla., where in a couple of instances, he was deployed to New Orleans to assist sister stations in covering Hurricane “Lilly” in 2002 and Tropical Storm “Isidore.”

When not working, you’ll catch Darren on one of his famous road trips exploring beautiful New England (especially during the summer). He is also proud to be a tenured Associate lecturer at his alma mater CCSU teaching in the Department of Journalism.

Darren also enjoys mentoring learners who are looking to get into the exciting field of journalism and broadcast journalism.  He also acts on the board of the Connecticut Society of Professional Journalists.  Darren volunteers his time at countless events raising money and awareness for different types of cancer research.  You will also frequently catch Darren active in helping homeless animals find good homes.
