Via his stories, he has been able to move all over Canada and travel to countries throughout the world. This includes Kenya, K North Korea, Kurdistan, the Arctic, and Afghanistan. Brett is a graduate of the University of Western Ontario. In addition, he instructed long-form broadcast journalism at Sheridan College in Oakville, Ontario. This is in addition to a set of Vietnamese journalists in Hanoi, Vietnam.

Mitchell was also an integral member of the W5 team when the program took home the prestigious Gordon Sinclair Award.
