Career|Wiki

The 38-year-old got his first tattoo at age 15. In 2004, he ordered a tattoo kit online and started practicing on himself, his relatives, and friends. Only three months later he accepted a job at his dad’s friend’s tattoo shop outside a nearby trailer park, where the next year, he commenced working at Rage of the Needle in Minquadale, Delaware. McCurdy soon committed to being a tattoo artist by having a gun tattooed on either side of his neck, with the lettering reading “Bang Bang”, resulting in his occupational nickname.

Less than a year after launching his profession, Keith Scott relocated to New York City. Though he had a hard time finding work at first, bouncing from one tattoo shop to the next, McCurdy eventually found work at Crazy Fantasy in Greenwich Village, which he recounted as “the dirtiest, most disgusting, shittiest, most dilapidated vomitorium on that little strip.”

Soon after he shifted to a nearby parlor named Whatever Tattoo, where he quickly earned a reputation as the best tattoo artist in the shop, it was there in 2007 that he first met Rihanna, a Barbadian pop star. Rihanna had originally wanted a Sanskrit prayer down the back of her legs, but he persuaded her to get the tattoo on her hip instead. While her tattoo was being done, she was with a reporter, and countless people began gathering around the tattoo shop’s window to watch her get it done. Rihanna’s tattoo changed McCurdy’s life and opened up many more chances for him. He made iconic tattoos with subject matter and body location that were copied endlessly, an instance being the lion face tattooed on Cara Delevingne’s index finger.

As demand for his work increased, the 38-year-old went to work between a few tattoo parlors, including East Side Ink and Last Rites. When his bid for ownership was spurned, he planned to start his shop, a move which ultimately led to his firing. After about 10 years of work around New York City, in 2013 Keith opened Bang Bang Tattoo on Clinton Street, with investment cash coming from his dad. Nevertheless, their relationship deteriorated quickly, and he restarted the business in a new shop on Broome Street the following year. In 2015, McCurdy printed a memoir and coffee table book Bang Bang: My Life in Ink. In 2018, he launched a second location on Grand Street in SoHo. Featured on MTV, CNN, People magazine, E!, and TMZ, Vogue named McCurdy “the most popular tattoo artist in the world”.

Bang Bang Magic Ink

McCurdy is a world-famous tattoo artist recognized for his long list of celebrity clients. This Year 2024, he launched the “disappearing” ink with some of the world’s top tattoo artists. Keith is now embarking on a quest to turn tattoos into medical diagnostic devices, utilizing “Magic Ink” — a tattooing ink that can be turned on or off by being exposed to light.

McCurdy has joined forces with the assistant professor of mechanical engineering at the ATLAS Institute at the University of Colorado in Boulder, Colorado, the inventor of the ink Dr. Carson Bruns. The two believe that Magic Ink will eventually be used to warn persons with diabetes about their blood sugar or to alert individuals to slap on sunscreen.

He has already tattooed his friend David Blaine, an American magician and mentalist, and of course, has inked himself with it — at least 50 times. The plan behind Magic Ink is for the particles to be switched on — whether for a more serious purpose or a surprise addition to body art. Once injected into the skin, the particles become noticeable by being exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light, remain visible, and are then “switched off” — or deactivated — by a regular flashlight, including one from a phone, being run over the tattoo. It can then be switched back on by being vulnerable to UV light.

Keith demonstrated The Post one of his Magic Ink tattoos, lifting his pant leg and flashing a UV stylus light on the skin below his knee, the word “SAD” in red suddenly appeared and then he ran the flashlight over it and it disappeared – like nothing had ever been there.
