Russ commenced his journalism career at WCTI in New Bern, where he worked in the bureau in Jacksonville and covered Camp Lejeune. Having grown up in Eastern North Carolina, he was used to evacuating from hurricanes as a reporter and was in the middle of the storm 4 times as hurricanes swept throughout North Carolina in his first year on the job. Russ also worked as Radio News Broadcaster, at American Airlines (NC/NYC) for 10 years from 1989 – 1999.
