Carter is a weeknight evening anchor at CBS 17 News. He anchors WNCN-TV newscasts at 4,5,6,11. Rod joins WNCN-TV after spending about two decades at WFLA in Tampa, Florida.
Likewise, Rod guides and coaches upcoming journalists as a mentor. For years he has been the lead trainer for the NABJ-FAMU Journalism Short Course, instructing students in broadcast during an intensive weekend course. Rod also worked at St. Augustine’s University in Raleigh as a Fall 2021 adjunct professor of communications.
Prior to working at WFLA, Rod was a Morning and Midday Anchor for two years and 9 months at WVTM-TV, Birmingham, Alabama Area from Jul 2007 to Mar 2010. Before that, he served as a Reporter and Fill-in Anchor at WFLA-TV News Channel 8 / WTTA-TV Great 38, Tampa/St. Petersburg, Florida Area for about 7 yrs from Jul 2000 to Jul 2007 · From October 1996 to July 2000, Rod was a Morning and Midday Anchor at WVTM-TV, Birmingham, Alabama Area.
Before working at WVTM-TV, he was a reporter and anchor at WAGT, Augusta, GA from October 1995 to October 1996. From August 1993 to October 1995, Rod was a Weekend Anchor and Reporter at WTXL, Tallahassee, FL. He also served as a Producer at WCJB, Gainesville-FL from October 1992 to August 1993. After college, Rod began his journalism occupation as a Producer, Reporter, and Host at WFSU, Tallahassee, FL from August 1990 to October 1992.
Besides being a journalist, he is the International Director of Publicity for the fraternity and is a proud Life representative of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity. Likewise, Rod is a charter member of the Sigma Xi Sigma chapter in Tampa and the previous 2nd Vice President. Since shifting to Raleigh, he has joined the Eta Sigma Chapter of the fraternity and is also a representative of the NAACP.
Further, Rod is the immediate previous Region III Director for the National Association of Black Journalists and a previous president of the Tampa Bay Association of Black Journalists. He is currently a member of the Raleigh-Durham Chapter of the NABJ.
