Boorstin was born and raised to American parents in the United States. She is the child of Paul (father) and Sharon Boorstin (mother). Her dad is a screenwriter and producer for film and television such as the film Fire with Fire (1986) and the series Hart to Hart (1982) and Fame (1982) while her mother is an author.

Julia’s late granddad was the Pulitzer-winning historian Daniel J. Boorstin (1914-2004) while her grandmother, Ruth Frankel (1917-2013), was a published poet and reviewed books for The New York Times in the 1940s in addition to assisting in editing her husband Daniel’s academic writing.

As per her education, Julia attended the Harvard-Westlake School in Los Angeles before joining Princeton University, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in history. She joined CNBC in May 2006 as a general assignment reporter before transitioning in 2007 to Los Angeles to cover media. Previously, she was a member of the ensemble for CNBC’s daily program, “TechCheck,” which operated from April 2021 to February 2023.

In 2013, Boorstin produced and started the CNBC Disruptor 50, an annual list she oversees, highlighting the private firms transforming the economy and challenging firms in established industries.
