John has established his career as a journalist. After completing his studies, he served at The Tyrone Constitution located in Omagh. Later in 1987, he became a reporter working for Ulster Television (UTV) for a period of seven years. Afterwards, he left UTV he joined ITN in 1994 as a producer. Two years later, he was promoted to the position of principal Ireland Correspondent.
Moreover, in 2001, John shifted to the Middle East, based in Jerusalem. During his time in the Middle East, he reported the Israeli Army’s occupation of Ramallah. Later, he shifted to Iraq, and at this point, his career as a journalist started to skyrocket. He was based in Baghdad, covering nightly reports during the aerial bombardment.
Furthermore, his report and coverage of the invasion earned him the Royal Television Society Journalist of the Year award. In addition, he became ITV’s Asia Correspondent after moving to Bangkok and later became ITN’s Washington Correspondent. More so, he was the first ITN reporter to report on the Haiti earthquake from Port-au-Prince.
His contribution helped ITV win a BAFTA award for coverage of the disaster. Currently, Irvine is the senior international correspondent based in the ITV News Dubai bureau. Likewise, he covers stories around the globe.
