In 2013 he was hired by the Dallas Cowboys as an assistant coach as he was working under Jason Garret. After five years he left Dallas to join Las Vegas Raiders. After the resignation of Gruden, he was posed as the interim coach in 2021. There were signs of his being out of the team as the head coach and the opportunity to be snatched by someone else.
