After college, Pauley commenced her broadcasting profession at WISH-TV in Indianapolis prior to moving to Chicago where she became the first lady to anchor an evening newscast in what was then the 2nd largest television market in the nation. Within a year, however, her profession would skyrocket as she was chosen to replace Barbara Walters on NBC’s Today Show with Tom Brokaw, first as a correspondent but soon as co-host.

She remained on Today for over 13 years, touring the world to interview newsmakers and reporting from various iconic locations including the wedding of Princess Diana and Prince Charles, the Great Wall of China, and a special Today show audience with Pope Jon-Paul II. From 1980 to 1982, she also hosted the Sunday edition of the NBC Nightly News, bringing her into even more living rooms across America.

In 1989, things shifted for Jane as she was very publicly replaced on the Today Show by the younger Deborah Norville. The move sparked nationwide conversation and controversy, but also led Pauley into the next phase of her profession as she commenced work on a weekly primetime news magazine, Real Life with Jane Pauley, that afterward became Dateline, one of the most recognized primetime shows in television history. She would remain co-host of Dateline for over a decade, interviewing hundreds of viewers and covering many major news events.

Upon recovering from her illness, Pauley returned to television in 2004 with a daytime talk show, The Jane Pauley Show, that only lasted one season. Then 54 years old, she commenced to fear her television profession was over—but soon started to develop a new, original project that she describes as “the first thing I ever really invented.” This new endeavor centered on reinventing your life after age 50 and ran as a series on the Today Show for 4 years. It also led to Jane’s 2nd New York Times bestseller, Your Life Calling: Reimagining the Rest of Your Life.

In 2014, she joined CBS Sunday Morning as a correspondent and occasional guest host. In September 2016, she was chosen to replace Charles Osgood as the program’s permanent host, making her the only lady anchor of a Sunday morning news program.
