His American-born dad converted to Judaism three years before relocating to Israel. After settling in Israel, his dad joined the Israeli army and met his mother, who had emigrated from Romania. Ami is an Israeli American tattoo artist with over 25 years of experience, an entrepreneur, and a TV personality. He described that he was drawn into art and tattooing from a young age, revealing that his father had tattoos and was a painter.
At age 15, James received his first tattoo, an experience that left him single-minded to become a tattoo artist. During his adolescence, James shifted to Israel and joined military service as an Infantry sniper in the Israel Defense Forces. In 1992, he commenced his apprenticeship at Tattoos By Lou with tattoo artist Lou. In 1996, Ami moved and stayed in Denmark for several months, where he did tattoos.
Besides being a tattoo artist, James is the founder of the Miami-based tattoo shop, Love Hate Tattoos, where he co-owns the studio with Chris Núñez, a judge on Ink Master.
He also co-proprietors the DeVille clothing firm with Núñez and Jesse Fleet, and the Miami nightclub Love Hate Lounge, with Núñez and two other close friends. He has also made designs for Motorola’s RAZR V3 mobile phones.
Most recently, James also invested in a jewelry line, Love Hate Choppers Jewelry, with Boston jeweler Larry Weymouth. In 2013 James collaborated with PETA in an ad for their “Ink Not Mink” campaign. In November 2012, it was declared that Ami was launching a tattoo studio, ‘Love Hate Social Club’ in London, UK. During its fourteenth season, in 2022, James became a judge on Ink Master, replacing Nuñez and Oliver Peck.
